Quietly, I unlocked the front door and set a bag of tacos down on the table. “Dinner!” I called out, my voice echoing through the house.

I went to Rayn’s room to let her know I’d gotten home. Her door had been left cracked open, but she wasn’t there. At least this time her room wasn’t thrashed.

“Hey, are these all the same?” Dmitri asked, digging through the bag of tacos.

“Some are chicken and some are shredded beef,” I answered, peeking into the kitchen. “Where’s Ray?”

“I thought she was in her room.”

A chill ran up my spine. “She’s not.”

“I’ve had my headphones in but I didn’t see her leave.” Dmitri glanced over his shoulder.

I walked into the kitchen to the window that looked over the backyard. After seeing the dim light shine through the small window of the tool shed, my face fell flat.

“She’s with him,” I muttered.

Dmitri nearly dropped his taco. “Why?”

“I’m going to find out.”

Once I got to the tool shed, I pressed my ear against the door and listened. I could make out two voices and what they said. Sure enough, one of those voices belonged to my sister.

“I’m sorry everyone has been so rough on you,” Rayn replied softly. “They don’t understand.”

“My fate would be much worse if I had stayed with my pack,” Aden said. I pressed my ear harder against the door. “I wouldn’t have made it another night in the woods with those injuries.”

“I can’t believe they tried to kill you.” Rayn sounded surprised, even though we had found him half dead in the trees, left behind by his own family.

“Were you never punished? I can imagine you’ve run into some mischief with fire magic,” Aden said.

Fire magic. The biggest question, did Aden see Rayn use her powers in the meadow or did she tell him? Aden had saved us and hadn’t given me any reason not to trust him. But still, this could be a cover. I honestly didn’t know what to believe anymore.

“Oh, no. My mom never did anything like that. She grounded us and stuff, but she was always forgiving when it came to our powers,” Rayn explained. “I got into a lot of mischief, but Whitney was always there to step in before things got too out of control.” She laughed, giggled almost.

I opened the door back, and the laughter stopped immediately. “Hi.”

Rayn jumped up to her feet. “I didn’t know you were home.”

“Here, I brought you a taco. Hope you like chicken.” I handed the wrapped soft taco to Aden.

“Thank you.” He took the offering and set it on his lap.

“I have some questions for you,” I said to Aden, leaning against the wooden work bench. “I need honest answers.”

“I have nothing to gain from lying to you,” Aden replied.

“I hope not. How long have you been hunting around Rifton?”

“Not long,” Aden answered. “A little over six months.”

“And why not longer?”

Aden shrugged. “I didn’t think to ask. A while back, my pack leader told us we would be hunting south and moved into the forest around town.
